Joined Sep 20, 2007. 1,696 Posts. #7 · Jul 30, 2009. Hi Paul, It's a fairly common variation; SxS hammer gun, side lever, DT, usually in .410. I've always heard it called a 'Poacher's Gun'. Many of the Spanish makers have made this type of shotgun, and I see them on the auction sites several times a year.

It is a working man's shotgun; reliable, durable, and inexpensive which is why so many retailers sold them. It remains a popular shotgun for those same reasons.

I did just now try to call Cole Haugh and left a message. Hope it pans out. I was looking at a 12 ga. Weatherby Athenia de Italia, sxs, double trigger w/ AE, NIB for $1700. Wood to metal was perfect, checkering was 28 lines without a skip or over run, probably laser cut and the wood was very nice with good figure.

The barrels are 28 inches and bore M&F--.018 and .036. 14 7/8 x 1 3/8 x 2 3/8" Factory sling swivel eyes. Great shooting dimensions. So, it depends on what you get and when it was made. My general rule of thumb on Spanish guns, when the Euro is high, is that if they cost the same, they are the same. It has an Anson & Deeley boxlock action, and is probably the most common model offered by Ugartechea. The ones I've seen all had 28" or 30" barrels, so my guess is either yours is a custom order, or more likely, someone cut down the barrels for HD or for cowboy action shooting. Bryan Lee. Ugartechea's lower end boxlock can be a study in frustration due to the variations that are out there. A typical model 30 usually will not have chopper lump barrels and the hidden third fastener. Those features seem to have been reserved for the model 221 that was imported by Exel arms in the 1980's.
